India is taking a significant step forward in strengthening its air power with the development of the I-STAR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance) aircraft. This advanced system is expected to boost the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) capabilities in intelligence gathering and precision targeting, playing a vital role in modern-day warfare and national defence.
Project Overview
The I-STAR project, valued at around ₹10,000 crore, is awaiting final approval from the Defence Ministry. It involves the acquisition of three state-of-the-art aircraft from global manufacturers like Boeing or Bombardier. These platforms will be integrated with indigenous sensors and electronic warfare systems developed by DRDO, showcasing India’s progress in defence indigenisation.
Key Features and Capabilities
The I-STAR aircraft will be equipped with multi-spectral surveillance systems capable of detecting, tracking, and identifying critical enemy assets such as radar stations, missile batteries, and command centres. Operating day and night, even in complex terrains, these aircraft will provide real-time battlefield awareness without crossing into enemy airspace.
Strategic and Operational Significance
One of the most important features of the I-STAR system is its ability to operate from high altitudes and at stand-off ranges. This reduces the risk to pilots and aircraft while still allowing for deep penetration surveillance and precise targeting. These capabilities are vital for both deterrence and rapid response in high-tension scenarios, especially along sensitive border areas.
