Global Cooling Pledge

Context

The Global Cooling Pledge, signed by 63 countries, including the US, Canada, and Kenya at COP28, commits to reducing cooling emissions by at least 68% by 2050.

 Global Cooling Pledge

The Global Cooling Pledge is a voluntary agreement launched at the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in the UAE. It aims to raise ambition and international cooperation on tackling the climate impact of the cooling sector.

Key Objectives:

  • Reduce cooling-related emissions by 68% from 2022 levels by 2050.
  • Significantly increase access to sustainable cooling solutions for the most vulnerable populations by
  • Increase the global average efficiency of new air conditioners by 50% by 2030.

 Expected Outcomes:

  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions: The pledge aims to curb emissions from the cooling sector, contributing to achieving the Paris Agreement goals.
  • Improved access to sustainable cooling: By promoting efficient and climate-friendly cooling technologies, the pledge seeks to ensure equitable access to cooling for all, especially in vulnerable regions.
  • Enhanced technological innovation: The pledge is expected to drive innovation in the cooling sector, leading to the development and deployment of more efficient and affordable cooling solutions.

Current Status:

  • Over 60 countries have signed the pledge as of December 2023.
  • The UNEP Cool Coalition report “Global Cooling Watch 2023: Keeping it Chill” provides a roadmap for achieving the pledge’s goals.
  • The Global Cooling Pledge is considered a key outcome of the COP28 Presidential Action Agenda.

Additional Notes:

  • The Global Cooling Pledge is not a legally binding agreement. However, it serves as a strong political commitment from participating countries.
  • The pledge focuses not only on space cooling (e.g., air conditioning) but also on cold chains for food and health.
  • The success of the pledge will depend on continued political will, financial investment, and technological innovation.
