MAJOR MARITIME PORTS OF INDIA

WHY IN NEWS?

BACKGROUND

About 95 per cent of India’s trading by volume and 70 per cent by value is done through maritime transportation.

 India has 13 major ports (12 Government-owned and one private) and 187 notified minor and intermediate ports.

MAJOR PORTS:  Administered by central government.

MINOR PORTS: Administered by relevant coastal state.

The total 200 major and non-major ports are present in the following States: Maharashtra (53); Gujarat (40); Kerala (21); TamilNadu (15); Andhra Pradesh (13); Karnataka (10) and others (50).

TAMIL NADU

1.CHENNAI PORT:  

The port is the largest one in the Bay of Bengal.

Artificial port.

 

2.ENNORE/KAMARAJAR PORT

Located 18km north of Chennai.

The first port in India which is a public company.

The Kamarajar Port Limited is the only corporatised major port and is registered as a company.

 

3.TUTICORIN PORT/ VO CHIDAMBARAM PORT

V.O. Chidambaranar Port is an artificial port

KERALA

 

4.COCHIN PORT

 The port lies on two islands in the Vembanadu Lake Willingdon Island and Vallarpadam

1st transshipment port in India

MAHARASHTRA

 

5.MUMBAI PORT

Lies on natural deep-water harbour of Mumbai (Bombay) in Maharashtra.

 

6.JAWAHARLAL NEHRU PORT/ NAVA SHEVA PORT

The second largest container port in India after Mundra Port.

ANDHRA PRADESH

 

7.VISHAKAPATANAM PORT

Deep landlocked sea port of india

Handles mainly iron ore expoets

ORISSA

 

8.PARADWEEP PORT

a natural, deep-water port 

Located at the confluence of Mahanadi with Bay of Bengal.

The port deals with the trade of iron ore, pellets, coal, Alumina and oil.

WEST BENGAL

 

9.KOLKOTA PORT(Also known as diamond harbour, SP Mukerjee port)

It is the only riverine major port of India. Located on the left bank of Hugli river.

Freshwater port with no variation in salinity.

Oldest operating port in India

 

10.HALDIA PORT

Located on the right bank of hoogly at the confluence of Haldia and Hoogly river.

GUJARAT

 

11.KANDLA PORT/ DEENDAYAL PORT

Located on the Gulf of Kutch.

It is the largest port of India by volume of cargo handled.

 

12.MUNDRA  PORT(NOT A MAJOR PORT)

India’s first private port, largest container port located on the northern shores of the Gulf of Kutch 

KARNATAKA

 

13.MANGALORE PORT

It is all-weathered and deep water port. Deals with iron ore imports. It is the only major port in the coastal state of Karnataka.
