Context
In a historic move, the Supreme Court designated 11 women lawyers as senior advocates, a first in a single round of appointments.
Who is an Advocate on Record?
– An AOR is a lawyer with special permission to practice before the Supreme Court of India.
– They act as a bridge between the client and the Supreme Court, handling all filings, pleadings, and appearances.
Why is an AOR needed?
– Only AORs can file cases and appear in the Supreme Court.
– Advocates (lawyers) who are not AORs can only argue cases with the assistance of an AOR.
Eligibility and Procedure to become an AOR:
– Be an advocate for at least 5 years.
– Pass the AOR exam, conducted by the Supreme Court.
– Complete a one-year training period under an existing AOR.
