Why in News?
The Geological Survey of India (GSI) celebrated its 174th Foundation Day on 4th March, 2024, in a grand manner across all its offices throughout the country.
What is Geological Survey Of India?
- The GSI is a government organization in India, attached to the Ministry of Mines for conducting geological surveys and studies.
- It is one of the premier organizations of earth science survey and research in the world.
- The GSI was established in 1851.
- The Geological Survey of India (GSI) was set up in 1851 primarily to find coal deposits for the Railways.
- Its headquarters is in Kolkata.
- It has regional offices in Lucknow, Jaipur, Nagpur, Hyderabad and Shillong.
- GSI also has unit offices in almost all States of the country.
- Its main functions relate to creating and updating of national geoscientific information and mineral resource assessment.
- These objectives are achieved through ground surveys, air-borne and marine surveys, mineral prospecting and investigations, multidisciplinary geoscientific, geo-technical etc.
- The Geological Survey of India (GSI) declares geo-heritage sites/ national geological monuments for protection and maintenance.
