AGNI PRIME MISSILE

Why in news?

New generation ballistic missile Agni Prime successfully tested.

ABOUT

Developed by : DRDO as the 6^th missile in the Agni series to replace the older Agni versions

It is a surface to surface ballistic missile.

PROPULSION

Has 2 Stage solid propulsion

RANGE

Can cover a maximum distance of 2000km with 1.5 tonne payload (i.e can cover  Pakistan and mainland China)

LAUNCH

Capable of cannister launch (with the warhead already mated with the missile — gives the army operational flexibility to transport it by rail/road)

Capable of cold launch (the rocket engine ignites after it is lifted away from the launch platform hence, launch platform suffers minimum impact) and in salvo mode (multiple missiles can be launched within in an interval of 2-2.5 seconds in various trajectories.)

NAVIGATION

Agni-P utilizes dual redundant navigation and guidance system based on an advanced ring laser gyro-based inertial navigation system (INS) and a modern micro inertial navigation system (MINS)

WARHEAD:

Agni-P can be mated to a Maneuverable Reentry Vehicle (MaRV) ( a type of warhead for ballistic missiles that is capable of maneuvering and changing its trajectory.)
