Issues Related to Poverty and Hunger Global Hunger Index (GHI)

The Global Hunger Index (GHI), published by Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide since 2006, gauges global hunger using four indicators: undernourishment, child stunting, child wasting, and child mortality.

  • State of India
    • In South Asia, India ranks 107th, classified as “serious,” with a score of 29.1, trailing Sri Lanka (64), Nepal (81), Bangladesh (84), and Pakistan (99).
    • Only Afghanistan(109) fares
    • China tops the list with a score under
    • India’s child wasting rate stands at 3%, the world’s highest.
    • Undernourishment has risen to 3%, affecting 224.3 million people.
    • Child stunting decreased from 7% to 35.5%, and child mortality dropped from 4.6% to 3.3% between 2014 and 2022.

Better nutrition involves more than just food,  it  includes  health,  water, sanitation, gender perspectives, and social norms. Therefore, there is a need to look forward to comprehensive policy to  fill  the  nutritional  gap.  If Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and nutrition policies like Poshan Abhiyan are interlinked, India’s nutritional situation will  undergo  holistic changes.
