Mount Etna
Mount Etna is a highly active stratovolcano located on the eastern coast of Sicily, Italy, between the cities of Messina and Catania. It lies at the convergent boundary between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates. With volcanic activity dating back over 500,000 years, Etna is the tallest active volcano in Europe, rising to about 3,403 meters. It features a complex crater system with multiple summit craters and hundreds of flank vents, allowing both central and lateral eruptions.

Etna is renowned for its frequent eruptions, with significant recent activity in 2018, 2021, and again in 2025. Its explosive nature, sometimes producing ash plumes that reach the stratosphere, has sparked debate over whether it should be classified as Strombolian or Plinian. Recognized for its geological and cultural importance, Mount Etna was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013.
