Nobel Prize

The Nobel Prizes are the world’s most prestigious awards, given annually to individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to science, literature, peace, and economics. The prizes were established by Alfred Nobel, a Swedish chemist, engineer, inventor, businessman, and philanthropist. Nobel died in 1896, and his will stipulated that his fortune be used to create a series of prizes for those who had “conferred the greatest benefit on humankind.”

The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901, and since then, over 900 individuals and organizations have been honoured. The prizes are awarded in six categories:

• Physics
• Chemistry
• Physiology or Medicine
• Literature
• Peace
• Economics (added in 1968)

Award

Each Nobel Prize laureate receives a gold medal, a diploma, and a cash award. The cash award varies from year to year, but it is typically around one million US dollars.

The Nobel Prizes are awarded by five different Nobel committees, each of which is responsible for a different category. The committees are made up of experts in their respective fields, and they nominate candidates for the prizes each year. The final decision on who wins is made by the Nobel Assemblies, which are composed of members of the Swedish Academy, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Karolinska Institute, the Norwegian Nobel Committee, and the Swedish Riksbank.

The Nobel Prizes are presented in a ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden, on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
