PURPLE ECONOMY

  • Shanti Raghavan, the 2020 Business Line Change Makers Award recipient, leads EnAble India, a pioneering organization focused on fostering a ‘purple economy.’ This innovative concept aims to promote disability inclusion and create widespread job opportunities.

  • The ‘Care Economy’ encompasses economic activities centred on providing care and support services, spanning healthcare, childcare, elderly care, and more. It covers both paid and unpaid care work, playing a crucial role in social and economic development.

  • In contrast, the ‘Purple Economy’ is an economic order emphasizing the sustainability of caring labour. It offers an alternative to the green economy and aims to organize systems around caring labour’s sustainability, rectify gender-based inequalities in unpaid and underpaid labour, and promote cultural potential within goods and  services.

  • Examples of the purple economy’s manifestation include sectors like Digital, Tourism, Luxury goods, and Housing. This unique approach contributes to a richer, more diverse cultural environment while fostering economic growth and inclusivity.
