- NHAI, formed in February 1995 under the National Highways Authority of India Act, 1998, operates as India’s foremost highway infrastructure developer, tasked with constructing, maintaining, and overseeing National Highways.
- Under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, NHAI functions as a statutory body.
- Comprising a full-time Chairman, a maximum of five full-time Members, and four part-time Members, all appointed by the Central Government.
- Part-time Members include the Secretary (RT&H), Secretary (Expenditure), Secretary (Planning), and DG (RD) & SS.
- At its Headquarters, NHAI maintains specialized wings for technical, financial, administrative, and vigilance functions.
