Vedic Clock

Context

World’s first Vedic Clock unveiled in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.

Vedic Clock

  • First of its kind: This 85-foot tall clock, inaugurated in March 2023, is the world’s first to showcase timekeeping based on the ancient Indian Vedic traditions.
  • Vedic timekeeping: Unlike conventional clocks, it calculates time based on the duration between two consecutive sunrises. This period is divided into 30 parts, with each “hour” lasting 48 minutes in comparison to the standard 60-minute hour.

 Information displayed:

The clock displays various details relevant to the Vedic Hindu Panchang, including:

  • Planetary positions
  • Muhurats (auspicious timings)
  • Astrological calculations
  • Predictions

 Standard timekeeping:

It also displays the standard timekeeping formats of Indian Standard Time (IST) and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) for users accustomed to those systems.

This project signifies the revival of India’s rich heritage in astronomy and mathematics, with Ujjain once serving as a prominent center for these studies.
