Context

The Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme 2024 (EMPS 2024) is introduced by the Ministry of Heavy Industries to boost the adoption of electric vehicles (Evs) in India

Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS)

There is a new program in India called the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) 2024. It aims to encourage people to buy electric two-wheeler and three-wheeler vehicles. Here are some key points about the scheme:

 Goal:

Increase the adoption of electric vehicles (Evs) in India.

 Timeframe:

Four months, from April 1, 2024 to July 31, 2024.

 Funding:

₹500 crore (around $60 million USD) total budget.

 Eligible Vehicles:

Electric two-wheelers (e-2W) and electric three-wheelers (e-3W) including e-rickshaws, e-carts, and L5 category vehicles.

 Incentives:

  • ₹10,000 subsidy for each e-two wheeler
  • ₹25,000 subsidy for small e-three wheelers (e-rickshaws and e-carts)
  • ₹50,000 subsidy for larger e-three wheelers with advanced batteries

This scheme is a successor to the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India) Scheme Phase II which  will end in March 2024. The EMPS 2024 offers slightly lower subsidies compared to FAME II, but it aims to provide a continued push for electric vehicle adoption.
