The Maharashtra cabinet has decided to propose renaming Mumbai Central Station after Nana Jagannath Shankarseth, a renowned social reformer and philanthropist who played a crucial role in shaping Mumbai.
Nana Jagannath Shankarseth
Nana Jagannath Shankarseth, also known as Nana Shankarsheth, was a prominent Indian figure in the 19th century, revered as the “architect of Mumbai” (then Bombay). He championed social causes and believed in the power of education. He played a key role in shaping Bombay’s infrastructure, along with figures like Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy.
Education Advocate:
- Established the first girls’ school in Mumbai.
- Founded the Native School Society of Bombay.
- Played a crucial role in the establishment of the Elphinstone Educational Institute (earlier the Bombay Native Education Society).
Political Participation:
- Became the first Indian nominated to the Legislative Council of Bombay.
- Served on the Bombay Board of Education.
Other Noteworthy Achievements:
- First Indian member of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai.
- Donated land for a theatre in Grant Road.
- Instrumental in Bombay’s reconstruction efforts post-1857.
