INS Varsha
India’s new underground naval base, named INS Varsha, is being developed near the coastal village of Rambilli in Andhra Pradesh. It’s located approximately 50 km south of Visakhapatnam, the headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command. This base is part of Project Varsha and is designed to house nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs). The base is expected to be operational by 2026. Underground facility:
The base includes underground pens and tunnels, providing a secure and stealthy location for submarines. Strategic location:
The location near Rambilli allows for discreet access to the Bay of Bengal and strategic routes like the Malacca Strait, enhancing India’s second-strike nuclear capability.
Enhances second-strike capability:
By keeping submarines submerged while docking, the base helps protect them from enemy satellites and enhances India’s ability to retaliate in case of a nuclear attack.
Part of Project Varsha:
This project aims to strengthen India’s naval capabilities and maritime security.
Expansion of naval infrastructure:
Alongside the development of INS Varsha, the western naval base at Karwar is also being expanded under Project Seabird, reflecting India’s focus on strengthening its overall naval presence.
