CSIP: PRELIMS BOOSTER SERIES- 167 SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION
The International Space Station (ISS), Earth’s sole active space laboratory, orbits approximately 400 km above the planet’s surface. This marvel of international cooperation involves more than 15 partner nations, including Russia, the United States, Canada, Japan, and various European Space Agency members.
The ISS, is a football-field-sized structure, races through space at a staggering speed of about 28,000 km per hour, completing a full orbit around Earth in just one and a half hours. In a single day, it embarks on approximately 16 voyages around the world.
While the ISS isn’t the first of its kind, preceding space stations like Russia’s Mir and America’s Skylab, it’s been operational since 1998 and is anticipated to remain active until at least 2028.
Objectives: The ISS conducts research in various fields, including astronomy, biology, physics, and Earth sciences, with a focus on advancing scientific knowledge and technology for both space exploration and life on Earth.
India’s Membership: India is not currently a member of the ISS, but it has its own space program and a history of collaboration with various space agencies.
The ISS stands as a testament to international cooperation in space exploration, fostering scientific advancement and paving the way for future missions.
